El Rancho Elementary School has been lucky enough to receive two grants through RIF - Reading Is Fundamental. The grants are for two different programs. The first is "Books for Ownership," which allows us to hold three book giveaways during the 2007-2008 school year. With this funding, each child in grades K-6 will be entitled to receive three books (one at each of the three events) during the school year, so that they may start their own library at home.
The second program is called, "Family of Readers." Capital One is sponsoring us through RIF, which allows us to have a Lending Library for all El Rancho Students and their Parents to enjoy. These books will be housed within our Parent Partner Room. We will have parent volunteers staff this room several times a week for your convenience.
In addition to the Lending Library, the Family of Readers Program, also asks that we put on a series of Literacy based workshops throughout the year. These workshops will be hosted during the morning hours in our School Library. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get new ideas on helping their children expand their reading potential. There are a total of "7" Workshops that you may attend, with each one having a different topic.
We will be asking parents to reserve a spot ahead of time, so we will know we have enough supplies on hand. If we find that these workshops are popular, we will repeat them again on a different day, so that more families can be accommodated.
Again, we encourage you to take part in learning new ways and techniques to broaden your child's educational future. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.
Thank you RIF and Capital One for making these programs possible for our students and their families!!!
Capital One - Leads the Way for El Rancho Students...
Gary Perlin, Chief Financial Officer for Capital One® Financial Services, recently announced the company's three-year, $1.25 million commitment to team up with Reading Is Fundamental® (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children's and family literacy organization. RIF will use the grant to help more than 56,000 children and families through its Family of Readers® program by supplying free books, holding parent workshops, providingand literacy resources to at-risk students from birth through 8 years of age and their families at RIF sites nationwide.
"Capital One is privileged to partner with Reading Is Fundamental® to promote the important role families play in developing young children's literacy skills," said Mr. Perlin. "Like RIF, we recognize that helping to build strong and healthy communities by focusing on our most precious resource—our children—benefits us all."
"Research shows that family involvement in a child's earliest reading is critical to raising lifelong readers," said Carol H. Rasco, President and CEO of RIF. "We are proud to join with Capital One to promote the important role families play in developing young children's literacy skills, and we look forward to providing even more books and literacy resources to the children and families who need them most."
RIF's Family of Readers program reaches more than 130,000 children and their families every year, many of them enrolled in Head Start, Even Start, and GED programs. RIF encourages parents to engage young children in fun reading activities that enhance important literacy skills.
About Reading Is Fundamental®, Inc.
RIF was founded in 1966 to motivate children to read by making it a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through a national, grassroots network of community volunteers at 21,000 program sites, RIF provides 5 million children with 17 million new, free books and literacy resources each year. For more information and to access reading resources, visit RIF's Web site at www.rif.org.
Twice Upon A Reading Challenge
The Twice Upon A Reading Challenge is an opportunity for Parents and Teachers to work together to offer our students at least two opportunities to have an adult read to them each day for two weeks. A reading "Contract" will be going home with all students in an effort to get our parents to take time to sit down and read with your child. We would appreciate your taking this challenge seriously and enjoy some special time reading to/with your child.
Remember...you are your child's FIRST teacher and you do have a role in their education. Please join us in making their future full of opportunities to shine.
